Description
Hot Wall, hot house, and Camelia House are located east of the south front of Cannon Hall in Cawthorne. These structures were built in 1761 for John Spencer Stanhope and designed by landscape gardener Richard Woods. They are constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings.
The Camelia House features a two-step stone podium and a segmental-arched gable with a large single segmental-arched window, which has a moulded brick surround. There is a moulded wooden cornice, although part of it is missing. The hot wall to the right steps down at intervals due to the sloping ground and has stone coping. It has been partly rebuilt, and there are no traces of fireplaces remaining.
At the right end of the hot house, there are round-arched entrances on each side, featuring a Gibbs surround with wrought-iron gates adorned with delicate scrolls and flowers from a central vase. The hot house itself is now roofless and lacks glazing, displaying a five-bay front with square ashlar-faced Ionic piers, a plain frieze, a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course. The rear wall includes a segmental-arched entrance with a gate similar to those found in the hot wall.
