Description
This is a former coach house, likely built in the 1760s for John Spencer Stanhope of Cannon Hall. It may have been designed by John Carr, the architect of Cannon Hall itself. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings, and coursed stone to the rear, and has a stone slate roof. It forms the west side of a courtyard.
The symmetrical facade, facing the courtyard, has nine bays. The central three bays project slightly and are topped with a pediment containing an oculus. An ashlar band sits between the ground and upper floors, acting as the base for five large carriage openings, with the left-hand opening partially blocked and the right-hand opening forming a passage. The carriage openings originally had tympanums, now filled with a 12-pane segmental-arched fixed light. Similar fixed lights are present in the upper-floor bays, although bays 1, 2, 3 now have six-pane sash windows. Later garage doors have been fitted to the three central bays. Doorways are located in bays 3 and 7. The ground floor has 12-pane sash windows in bays 1 and 2, and a later replacement window in bay 8. The roof is hipped. The rear elevation features five double-chamfered two-light windows, likely dating from the later 19th century, each with ten panes of glass.
