Description
Wool Greaves Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse dated 1672, constructed from thinly-coursed rubble with quoins and a stone slate roof that has been re-roofed. The building is L-shaped, consisting of two bays with a cross-wing on the right and stands two storeys tall. It features double-chamfered windows with hoodmoulds. The entrance is located to the left, framed by quoined surrounds and a Tudor-arched lintel inscribed with the words: "Intret fides exeot fraus J.M. 1672 R.M." To the right of the entrance, there is a 5-light window, with another 5-light window above it. The gabled wing has a 4-light window on each floor and shows evidence of a doorway to the left of the ground-floor window. The gable apex includes an oculus and dove perches, while the gable copings are hollow-chamfered on moulded kneelers. There are ashlar stacks located to the left and at the centre of the wing.
On the rear side facing the road, there are three-light windows under hoodmoulds in the gabled left bay, with an oculus in the apex and finials at the verges. The right side features one single window and two 2-light windows, along with a 2-light window on the first floor.
Inside, the left room has a moulded bressumer with an arch cut for the door, and a panelled screen to the heck-post that forms the lobby, although the right post is missing. The right end of the bressumer and the right spine beam are grooved for partitions, and the stair at the rear is enclosed in panelling. Wool Greaves Farmhouse is a good and relatively complete example of its type.
