Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1869 by W. H. Crossland, is a church located on Haigh Lane in Hoyland Swaine. It is constructed from tooled squared stone and features a slate roof. The building includes a west tower, a three-bay nave with a south porch, and a lean-to north aisle. The chancel has two bays and a north vestry. The church is designed in the Gothic revival style, specifically in the Decorated style.
The west tower is three stages high and has reducing angle buttresses. It features a three-light west window and large paired openings in the bell chamber that are louvred and have deep, hollow-chamfered reveals. The tower is adorned with crocketed corner pinnacles and has a stair tower on the south side. The nave has two-light windows, with paired windows in the second bay that have traceried heads. The chancel windows are similar but shorter, and there is a three-light east window. The north aisle windows are square-headed and consist of two lights.
Inside, the church has a three-bay arcade to the north supported by short octagonal piers, except for the leftmost pier, which is round. The nave and chancel feature a wagon roof with scissor bracing at the apex of the nave.
