Description

Kidfield House and barn is a farmhouse and adjoining barn located on Renald Lane in Penistone. The house has a late medieval timber frame, while the barn likely dates from the 16th century. Both structures were encased in stone in the 17th century, with the house being dated to 1658. The house underwent restoration around 1980. It features thinly-coursed rubble with quoins and a stone slate roof.

The house is two storeys high with an attic and consists of a single-bay cross-wing that connects to the barn, which has four internal bays. The timber frames of the house and barn are separate structures. The house has a chamfered plinth and the entrance is located to the right of the gable front, featuring a moulded surround, imposts, and a Tudor-arched lintel with eroded spandrel decoration. The inscription reads "1658/ J T/ H". To the left of the entrance is a three-light window with king mullions, alongside a two-light window and a three-light window, with the left three lights of the former being new and replacing a 19th-century doorway. A dripmould rises as a hood over the door. On the first floor, there is a three-light window with a hoodmould and a small chamfered light to its right. An attic window has two lights and a dripmould. The gable copings are hollow-chamfered on cut kneelers with apex finials, and the rear elevation has been rebuilt.

The barn is set back slightly and features a large square-headed cart entry, with an outshut to the right. Inside the house, there are two timber-framed bays, with the rear bay being a 17th-century addition. It includes jowelled posts and king post-trusses, with herringbone studding on the rear truss. The barn has almost complete framing with aisles, king-post trusses, and reversed-curved arched braces to the tie-beams and arcade plates.
