Description
This milestone, located approximately 600 metres east of Barnby Hall Farm, dates from the mid to late 19th century. It features a stone post with a cast-iron triangular front and a rounded top. The raised letters on the milestone read: "BARNSLEY & SHEPLEY LANE HEAD ROAD CAWTHORNE (BARNSLEY) CAWTHORNE (3 MILES) 1 MILE ( ) ( )". The milepost is partially buried. The Shepley Roads Turnpike Trust was established in 1825, with the road being completed in 1845 and abolished in 1875.
