18-24, SPURRIERGATE

A terrace of four houses with shops, built around 1841, and altered later, including in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of painted brick in Flemish bond, with No.20 rendered and lined to resemble ashlar. No.20 has a timber moulded eaves cornice, brick stacks, and a slate roof. The rear elevations of Nos 18 and 20 are of orange-grey brick in English garden wall bond, while the rear elevations of Nos 22 and 24 are rendered.

The front of the building has a four-storey, seven-window facade. A rear access passage is incorporated within the shopfronts, located between Nos 20 and 22. Nos 22 and 24 feature replacement shop windows with marble risers, framed by plain pilasters. The frieze includes angle blocks carved with Art Nouveau floral motifs, surmounted by a moulded cornice. A panelled upper door and overlight are set within a marble doorcase with a moulded cornice at the left end of Nos 22 & 24. No.18 has one 12-pane sash window with a cambered brick arch on all upper floors. Nos. 20 has two 12-pane sashes on the first and second floors, and unequal 9-pane sashes on the third floor, while Nos 22 and 24 have four 1-pane sashes on all floors. The windows of Nos 20, 22 and 24 incorporate grooved wedge lintels with keyblocks.

The rear elevations of Nos 18 and 20 each have two windows per floor, with 16-pane sashes on the ground and first floors, and 12-pane sashes on the second and third floors. These rear windows have sills and segmental arches of soldier brick. The rear windows of Nos 22 and 24 have been altered, except for two 12-pane sashes with stone sills on the second and third floors of No.22. The interiors were not inspected.
