Description
Nos. 19, 21, and 23 Walmgate are three houses that have been converted into two shops and a flat. They date from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, were refronted in the late 19th century, and have undergone alterations in the 20th century. The shopfront for No. 19 is from the 20th century, while Nos. 21 and 23 feature late 19th-century shopfronts.
The exterior is made of brick, with No. 19 in orange-brown Flemish bond, No. 21 painted, and No. 23 in white-washed stucco. The shopfronts are timber, with moulded timber eaves frieze and a pantile roof for Nos. 19 and 21, and a slate roof for No. 23. The building has a two-storey front with two windows for Nos. 19 and 21, and three windows for No. 23, the center one of which is blocked.
No. 19 features a shopfront with plain pilasters and moulded imposts beneath a broad fascia, which is supported by tall grooved brackets. The central glazed double doors are deeply recessed between plate glass windows over panelled risers. The shopfront for Nos. 21 and 23 has fluted pilasters beneath a sloped fascia and a moulded cornice, with fluted shaped brackets. The deeply recessed double doors at the left end have moulded panels, and the shop door for No. 21 is half-glazed and panelled. The windows are plate glass over moulded panel risers. The first-floor windows are one-pane sashes, with cambered heads for Nos. 19 and 21, and square heads for No. 23. The sills for Nos. 21 and 23 are painted.
The interiors were not inspected, but records indicate that No. 19 has an early 18th-century staircase with turned balusters, square newels, and a moulded handrail. No. 23 was formerly The Duke of York Public House. This building forms a group with Nos. 25, 17, 15, 13, 11, and 9, as well as Nos. 24, 26, 28, 32, and 34 on Walmgate.
