Description

17, 19, and 21 Bethlehem Street are houses that now serve as both residences and shops, built in 1781 with later alterations, including early 19th-century shop fronts. The buildings are constructed of brick, with Nos 17 and 19 painted and No. 21 rendered.

The exterior features two storeys and three first-floor windows. No. 21, located on the left, has a wooden doorcase with slender side panels and a frieze that includes half-round ribs with bulb finials, a moulded cornice, and a hood. There is a small shop front next to it, originally with a bow window, which now has a plate-glass window in an original wood surround, ribbed pilasters topped with brackets that have pyramidal heads, and an entablature with a plain frieze, moulded cornice, and hood.

No. 19, in the center, features a larger 19th-century shop front that includes a former doorway and a single window, both fitted with 20th-century plate-glass, surrounded by fluted pilasters and brackets, a panelled frieze, cornice, and hood.

No. 17 has a 20th-century shop front on the right, styled similarly to the 19th-century design, featuring a part-glazed panelled door and shop window in a wood surround with panelled pilasters, brackets, an entablature, and a hood. There is a segmental-headed passage entrance at the far right.

On the first floor, No. 21 has a 6/6 sliding sash window with a sill, while Nos 17 and 19 have two 20th-century windows with imitation glazing bars. To the right, there are two painted oval panels inscribed "WA" and "1781". The eaves cornice of Nos 17 and 19 is stepped and dentilled, while No. 21 has a plain rendered cornice. The gable to the left is raised and stone-coped. The interior has not been inspected.
