Description

Pettit's Butchers is a shop and house built in 1886, located on Bethlehem Street in Grimsby. The building is constructed of brick, painted up to the first floor, and features a Welsh slate roof. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has four first-floor windows.

The shop front is situated to the right and includes a plinth, a central entrance with a half-glazed panelled door beneath a large overlight, and a single plate-glass window on each side, both with moulded sills. Below these windows is a glazed-tile panel that displays a raised painted nameboard. Each window is topped with a perforated iron ventilation grille. To the left, there is a passage entrance with a moulded segmental arch and a recessed roller-blind.

The ground floor has a full-width wooden surround, with a passage door and shop window flanked by pilasters. The two outer pilasters support bold fluted brackets topped with ball finials. There is a frieze featuring a painted nameboard and a hood with a folding canopy. The first-floor features a sill band, with two sashes beneath keyed segmental arches that alternate with wooden canted bay windows. These bay windows have moulded sill bands, pulvinated friezes, moulded cornices, and tented roofs. All windows are 6/1 sashes, except for the 2/1 side sashes in the canted bays. The building is topped with a deep coved and dentilled plaster eaves cornice and has a pair of segmental-roofed 2-light dormer windows beneath moulded arches with small finials. The building has end stacks.

Inside, the shop features glazed patterned wall tiles. This building is a notable example of a late Victorian butcher's shop, showcasing a well-preserved shop front and tiled interior.
