Description

The Tivoli Tavern, located at No. 14 Old Market Place in Grimsby, is a public house that dates from the late 18th century, with some later alterations. The building is constructed of brick and has a stuccoed front, topped with a pantile roof.

It stands three storeys tall and features a single window on the first floor. The left side has quoins, and there is a doorway on the far right with a panelled door and an ornate coloured glass overlight, all set within a plain wood surround that includes a moulded frieze and a shallow hood. To the left of the doorway is an early 19th-century shop front, which has a central blocked entrance and is flanked by wide segmental bow windows with 20 panes, all in a wooden surround. These windows are supported by slender ribbed pilasters that hold moulded brackets, a frieze, a cornice, and a hood.

On the first floor, there is a tripartite sash window set in a flush wooden architrave, with a stone sill beneath a channelled and keyed cambered wedge lintel. The central light has a modern plate-glass imitation sash, while the side lights retain their original glazing bars. The second floor features a sill band and a pair of 6/6 sash windows in flush wooden architraves, also beneath channelled wedge lintels. The building has a moulded wooden eaves cornice and a raised coped gable on the left side. It likely represents the left half of a former three-bay house.

The interior was refitted in the mid-20th century, and the upper floors have not been inspected.
