Description

Nos. 2, 4, and 6 Newbiggin are two houses that have been converted into three shops. They date back to the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed rubble stone and feature a painted moulded brick eaves course. The roof is made of pantiles, with stone coping and a shaped kneeler at the right end, along with brick stacks at both ends and the center.

The structure has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window front. On the ground floor, No. 2 has a full-width shop front with sunk-panel pilasters on plinths, complete with imposts and a projecting cornice. It features half-glazed double doors with an overlight, flanked by half-canted plate glass windows above panelled risers. There is a narrow plate glass window at the right end, which was formerly a door opening. Nos. 4 and 6 have simpler shop fronts with plain pilasters, shaped imposts, and cornices, along with glazed doors to the right of plate glass windows over rendered risers.

On the first floor, there is a three-light canted bay to the right, which has pilaster mullions with imposts, a moulded cornice, and panelled risers. The windows are single-pane sashes with painted stone sills; those for Nos. 4 and 6 have flat arches made of voussoirs, while the window for No. 6 features a painted wedge lintel. No. 2 has two roof lights, while Nos. 4 and 6 have barge-boarded gable dormers.

Inside No. 4, there are chamfered beams and a quarter-round moulded wall plate in the party wall with No. 6, along with a chamfered timber lintel above the fireplace.
