Description
Nos. 36, 38, and 40 Scotch Street are three houses that have been converted into two shops with storage space above. They date from the late 18th century and have some alterations from the late 19th century. The exterior features painted incised stucco and graduated greenslate roofs, with rebuilt brick chimney stacks at the ends. The building is three stories high and consists of a four-bay block on Scotch Street, where Nos. 36 and 38 are located, with a gable end facing Old Blue Bell Lane. No. 40 is situated behind and faces the lane. Nos. 38 and 40 have been combined into one unit. The ground-floor shop windows of Nos. 36-40 were refurbished in 1990. Above these, there are sash windows in plain reveals, with those on the upper floor featuring glazing bars. No. 40 has upper-floor sashes, some with glazing bars, also in plain reveals and with stone sills. A Victorian scrolled wrought-iron lamp bracket is located at the corner nearest the Public Market, now fitted with a 20th-century imitation gas (electric) lamp. The interiors were not inspected, and the building was partly unoccupied at the time of the survey.
