Description

19 and 21 Fisher Street is a house that has been converted into two shops with an office above. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and has undergone later alterations. The building features Flemish bond brickwork set on a chamfered calciferous sandstone plinth, with all dressings made from this stone and V-jointed quoins. The roof is covered with Welsh slate, which was being replaced at the time of the survey, and there are rebuilt brick chimney stacks at each end.

The structure is two storeys high and has four bays. There are off-centre 20th-century double panelled doors within an engaged Roman Doric porch that has an entablature, a frieze with paterae, and a cornice. The ground floor has been altered to include 20th-century bowed shop windows. Above, there are sash windows with glazing bars set in brick reveals on stone sills. A rear staircase window features intersecting glazing bars, and a 19th-century rear extension includes a bowed bay window, while other extensions are from the 20th century.

Inside, the ground floor has been modified, with the stairwell blocked to create an upper-floor room and the stairs removed. The upper floor features a corridor with a rib-vaulted plaster ceiling, and there are panelled doors framed by fluted wooden architraves. The principal rooms have moulded plaster ceiling cornices and panelled window reveals.
