Description
39 Church Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It dates from the mid-18th century but may include parts of an earlier building, along with later additions and alterations. The front is finished in reddish brown brick and stucco, topped with a slate roof featuring coped verges on stone kneelers. The roof has a thin ridge stack at the center and internal end stacks, with the left stack rebuilt in late 19th century yellow brick. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a stone modillion eaves cornice and a cill band. The front has eight windows, with flush-framed glazing bar sashes on the first floor and three plate-glass sashes in 19th century moulded stone architraves on the lower right. There are four hip-roofed dormers with sashes in the roof slope. To the left, there is a chrome-framed shop front from around 1940, with a contemporary door in the fourth bay from the left. A 19th century pedimented stone doorcase is located in the third bay from the right. At the rear, there is a mid-18th century two-storey range, but the twin gables projecting from the roof may be part of an earlier structure.
