Description
The War Memorial to the Staff of the Cambrian Railways is located just inside Cae Glas Park, on the left side after entering through the Grade II-listed memorial gates. The memorial consists of a stone pillar approximately 2 meters tall. At the front, there is a bronze statue of a draped female figure looking upwards with outstretched arms. Behind the statue is a marble panel featuring a rising sun motif carved in low relief, bordered by stone.
The statue is positioned on a bronze half pedestal, which has a shallow ornamented bronze shelf beneath it. Mounted on the lower section of the marble panel is a brass plaque inscribed with the words: "THIS TABLET IS ERECTED TO PERPETUATE/ THE MEMORY OF/ THE MEN/ OF THE CAMBRIAN RAILWAYS/ WHOSE NAMES ARE HERE RECORDED AND/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING/ AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ (53 NAMES)."
In front of the memorial's base, there is a slate plaque affixed to a small stone. This plaque states: "THIS MEMORIAL REMOVED/ FROM THE CLOSED/ OSWESTRY RAILWAY STATION/ WAS ERECTED ON THIS SITE/ BY OSWESTRY TOWN COUNCIL/ AND UNVEILED BY/ CLLR W.G. JONES/ ON OCTOBER 23RD 1975." This additional plaque is not considered of special interest.
