Description
The Trelewis War Memorial is a war memorial featuring a life-size statue of a World War I soldier wearing a trench cap. The statue is carved from Sicilian white marble and faces east, with its head bowed and hands resting on the stock of an upturned rifle. It stands on a corniced square tapering pillar made of Forest of Dean stone, which is set on a two-stepped base within a paved area that is surrounded by iron railings.
The pillar has inscriptions made of Aberdeen granite on its faces. The inscription on the north face reads: "ERECTED BY THE / INHABITANTS OF TRELEWIS / TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND THE IMMORTAL MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE / WHO DIED / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE / GWELL ANGAU NA CHWILYDD." The east face lists the names of the World War I dead, while the west face commemorates the dead of World War II with the inscription "1939 – 1945 / IN HONOURED MEMORY OF" followed by their names. The south face is blank. Additionally, there is an inscription on the plinth that reads "D Williams & Son Abercynon."
A low stone surround is located at the front, which includes the inscription "RESITED BY THE ROYAL ENGINEERS 9TH FEBRUARY 2002."
