Description
The Quakers Yard Railway Viaduct is a Grade II* listed railway viaduct that spans the Afon Taf. This very tall, slightly curving structure features six arches and is the original viaduct located upstream, visible only from the north. It is constructed of massive rock-faced squared masonry and has highly modeled octagonal piers. The rock-facing is tooled at the edges and is banded three times with broad three-course bands of tooled masonry, while the capitals consist of six stepped courses of rock-faced stone.
The arches are remarkable, with deeply splayed edges, and the splays are made of tooled stone, as are the arch soffits. The spandrels are also finished in rock-faced stone, and there is a prominent coved string course in tooled stone, along with rock-faced stone parapets that feature ashlar copings. The ends of the abutments are splayed out.
An addition to the viaduct is simpler in design, featuring regular piers and caps in two courses. The arches of this addition have rock-faced stone voussoirs and vermiculated keystones, with the coved string course breaking forward over the keystones.
