Description
A pair of shops dating from the early 19th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with a slate roof and a central stack positioned immediately above the ridge. It is three storeys high and features a moulded plaster eaves cornice with fluted decoration. The front facade has two windows, with glazing bar sashes having gauged heads; the upper right window has been replaced with a 20th-century casement. Modern shop fronts are present. A re-sited gate pier is centrally located. The front elevation includes plastered stone with a round-headed niche below, displaying a painted borough coat-of-arms. A fluted band runs across the top of the niche, interrupted by the inscription "TOLL-THOROUGH." A small metal plaque above depicts Hercules carrying the world on his shoulders. The building is situated on the site of New Gate in the town walls, which was removed in 1782, as indicated by an information plaque. Similar gate piers, originally from Beatrice Gate, are built into the revetment wall at Oswestry Castle.
