Description
This property comprises two houses, now shops, located at 1 and 3 Church Street. The core of the building dates back to the 17th century and was remodelled in 1707, as indicated by a datestone. An early 19th-century extension was added, with significant later alterations, primarily in the late 20th century. The construction is a mix of timber framing and brick, with a slate roof.
The building consists of a main hall and a cross-wing, with a hip-roofed projection added at a right angle to the left side of the hall. The 19th-century projection has a toothed eaves cornice. The gable of the cross-wing features late 20th-century casement windows on the first floor and a contemporary shop front below. A second, late 20th-century shop front is present on the C19 projection. A tall rendered stack is situated to the right of the gable. A passageway to the right features chamfered spine beams.
A datestone, inscribed "P I E 1707," is situated on the gable, which also has an ornamental wrought-iron bracket that once held a shop sign.
Inside, the former rear wall of the gable exhibits a richly moulded bressumer, with run-out stops sawn off on the left to accommodate a late 20th-century staircase. Exposed purlins and wall-posts remain on the first floor of the gable, though the roof trusses were plastered over during a re-survey in August 1985.
