Description
Ye Olde Vaults Inn is a house that has been converted into an inn, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with significant remodeling in the late 18th century and early 19th century, along with later additions and alterations. The building features a timber frame that is concealed by a rendered brick facade, topped with a slate roof and internal red brick end stacks. It stands three storeys high and has a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The front has three windows, which are glazing bar sashes set in moulded stone surrounds, complete with eared architraves and small keystones. The 19th-century inn front has been largely renewed, featuring 20th-century doors leading to a round-arched passageway on the left and an entrance to the right of centre. Elliptical arches flanking the entrance have 20th-century fixed-light windows. At the rear, there is a gabled range that is rendered on the left side, while fragmentary square panels are exposed on the right. Inside the passageway leading to the King's Head Inn, square panels can be seen on the right gable end, along with a carved bracket that indicates the location of a former jetty at the front.
