Description
The War Memorial, located on Church Street in Oswestry, is a First World War memorial dating from around 1920. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features wrought-iron gates and railings. The memorial includes four square gate piers with moulded plinths and capping, ornamental gates at the center, and pointed railings atop low stone walls. There are pedestrian gates positioned by the central piers on both the left and right sides.
The two central piers are inscribed with the years "1914" and "1919." The left pier bears the inscription "THERE IS A/LIFE IN DEATH," while the right pier has the inscription "YE HAVE NOT/ DIED IN VAIN," both accompanied by a carved sword beneath. The names of the fallen from the First World War are recorded on the inner faces of these two central piers, and the names of those who were killed in the Second World War are listed on the back.
