Description

Whiteshill War Memorial is a First World War memorial that dates from 1919 and was later altered to include the names of those who fell in the Second World War after 1945. It is made from local limestone.

The memorial features a cross with cusped arms and carved details, set on an octagonal shaft above an octagonal base. This structure is elevated on a platform of four steps with chamfered edges. The foot of the shaft, just above the base, has a carved inscription on three sides that reads: "TO THE / GLORY / OF GOD." The corresponding three sides of the base are inscribed with: "AND IN GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF THE / MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR." Below this, the names and ranks of 36 men who died in the First World War are listed, along with the dates 1914-1919 on one face of the foot of the base.

Two steps of the platform feature later stone plaques. The upper plaque is inscribed with "1939 – 1945," followed by the ranks and names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War. The lower plaque reads: "1945-1995 / 50 YEARS / VE 8TH MAY 1945 / VJ 15TH AUGUST 1945 / THEY DID NOT FAIL US IN WAR / WE WILL NOT FAIL THEM IN PEACE."

The memorial is situated within a small, irregularly shaped paved enclosure, which is bordered at the back by a stone wall and on the other sides by low iron railings and a gate from the 20th century.
