Description

Sidbury War Memorial is a First World War memorial, unveiled in 1920 and subsequently altered to include names from the Second World War. The memorial is constructed from rough-hewn granite and stands on a purpose-built stone platform, accessible by two flights of steps, in a prominent roadside location at the centre of the village. It is situated overlooking Woodvale Cottage and The Retreat, both also listed buildings. The memorial takes the form of a tall, slender Latin cross placed upon a three-stepped base; the upper two steps are square, while the lowest step is octagonal. The eastern face of the second step down bears the inscription "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919./ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'." An additional inscription on the front of the lowest step commemorates those who died in the Second World War, reading "AND ALSO THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939-1945." No individual names are inscribed on the memorial itself.
