Description
The Peter Tavy War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of rock-hewn granite and features ashlar panels at the base that list the names of the fallen with inset lead lettering. The memorial has a square cross and shaft, with a hexagonal base that includes a hexagonal plinth and enclosure bordered by curb stones. A flat stone tablet extends from the base of the cross to the edge of the enclosure, recording the names of those who fell in the Second World War.
The cross is plain, with a Latin head and a tapered shaft. The octagonal base is sharply tapered and has a recessed ashlar panel on each side, each recording the name of one of the fallen. An inscription runs around the riser of the base, stating: ‘IN HONOURED MEMORY OF / THOSE OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919.’ The trapezoidal flat stone, which lists the names of the fallen from the Second World War, is inscribed with ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD’ at the top and ‘1939 – 1945’ below.
