Description

Church Cottage is a house that may have originally served as a church house, dating from the early 17th century and altered in the early 20th century. It features partly plastered granite rubble walls and a gable-ended concrete tile roof. There is a large rubble stack at the left gable end with a brick shaft, and a rendered stack to the right, aligned with a later addition.

The original layout consisted of two rooms, with the left-hand room heated by a gable fireplace. The original position of the stairs is uncertain; however, 19th or early 20th century straight-run stairs have been inserted between the two rooms. A blocked early doorway in the center of the rear wall presents a planning issue as it does not align with the front doorway, is at an intermediate level, and opens only into the churchyard. This doorway may have been reused or could have led to a stair projection that has since been demolished.

The exterior is two stories high with an asymmetrical three-window front featuring 20th century two-light casements. There is a 19th century lean-to open-fronted stone porch towards the left end, which includes stone seats and has an original hollow chamfered granite segmental-headed doorway behind it. To the right of center, there is a 20th century glazed door, and a similar blocked granite doorway is roughly at the center of the rear wall.

Inside, the cottage has heavy chamfered cross beams. A 20th century tiled fireplace has been inserted into an earlier opening. The roof has not been inspected, but it is possible that old timbers may still be present.
