Description
Stokenhill Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dated 1685, with a porch added in 1717. The building is constructed of coursed, squared, and dressed rubble limestone, with coursed rubble at the rear, ashlar and rendered chimneys, and a concrete tile roof. It is two storeys high with an attic and cellar, featuring a two-storey porch.
The south front has two full gables, with windows aligned below. The ground floor has two sets of two-light windows with king mullions, while the upper floor features three-light windows, and the attic has two-light windows with oval windows above. All windows are casements with recessed chamfered mullions and hoodmoulds. There are single-light windows adjacent to the porch, with hoodmoulds linking across from the main window. To the left, there is a two-light opening and a doorway to the cellar set in the plinth.
The central gabled porch has a cambered arch over a deep stone lintel, with a drip course above and a moulded keyed oval window. A dated sundial is present, along with very small side window openings on the upper floor and stone porch seats. The original door is a wide plank studded folding type.
The ends of the building also feature full gables with windows similar to those on the front. The rear has two gables, each with a projecting chimney; the left chimney has a rendered shaft, while the right has paired diagonal shafts with a linking cap featuring billeted moulding. There is a central 20th-century lean-to with a two-light casement above.
Inside, there are two square rooms on each floor, with a smaller room at the rear. The central staircase has winders and a raised coffin door at the foot. The beams have stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The principal rooms have good contemporary fireplaces, one on the ground floor featuring a dated iron fireback with three round arched smoke outlets. The upper floor fireplaces have moulded cornice mantelshelves. The roof structure features an extended collar truss.
Stokenhill Farmhouse is a good example of late 17th-century house design, retaining many original features that were revealed during recent restoration. There is also a contemporary privy to the west.
