Description
Rock Mill House is a house dated 1681. It is constructed of coursed and dressed limestone with ashlar dressings, and has a gabled stone slate roof with diagonally-set flues in the end stacks. The building follows a three-unit central-staircase plan with service wings to the rear. It is two storeys high with an attic, featuring full-height gabled dormers to the outer bays, and displays a symmetrical three-window facade. The ground floor includes a six-panelled door (two panels glazed) with stone lintels and six-pane sashes. Above the door is a two-light chamfered stone-mullioned window, and similar features are present in the dormer windows and another window. The interior displays jewel-stopped beams and chamfered joists, and a late 17th century fireplace with a moulded stone architrave in a ground-floor room. Further features include early 19th century panelled doors and shutters, a dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and fret-cut brackets, and a panel over the doorway to the rear of the hall bearing the date 1681 and the initials EG, which stand for Edward Gardner, the person for whom the house was built.
