Description

The Woburn Sands and Aspley Heath War Memorial is located in a garden on the west side of High Street, about 25 meters south of Woburn Sands Library. This memorial is made of rusticated Portland stone and features a tall, tapering pylon that is square in shape, standing on a base with a single step. At the top of the pylon is a small wheel-head cross. A clock, which is a replacement made by Smith in London, is set into the top of the pylon and has faces on three sides, each surrounded by carved laurel wreaths.

The main dedicatory inscription is on a panel on the front face of the memorial, which reads: "LEST WE FORGET/ THIS MEMORIAL/ WAS ERECTED BY/ INHABITANTS OF/ WOBURN SANDS AND/ ASPLEY HEATH IN/ REMEMBRANCE OF/ THOSE WHOSE NAMES/ ARE INSCRIBED WHO/ DIED FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY AND THE/ FREEDOM OF NATIONS/ 1914 1918."

An additional panel on the north-east face of the pylon includes later dedications, stating: "THIS TABLET/ WAS ADDED IN MEMORY OF/ (7 NAMES)/ WHO PAID THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/ IN THE 2ND GREAT WAR/ 1939 - 1945/ 'AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN/ AND IN THE MORNING/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.'/ ALSO OF/ (1 NAME)." The rear face of the pylon has a panel that reads: "ENROLLED ARE THEY/ FOR HIGHER SERVICE NOW/ 1914 1918/ (43 NAMES)."
