Description
Sandpit Cottage is a squatter's cottage built in 1810 by William Whipham. It is timber framed and rendered, with a thatched roof. The cottage consists of two bays, each with a stack at the end walls, and has a central lobby entrance that leads to a stair bay. The right-hand bay features a spine beam that is chamfered with run-out stops, with slender joists exposed. The spine beam in the left-hand bay is nearly half round in section. At the rear, there is a two-storey projection facing gable, which was built in the 20th century. Notable interior features include a narrow fire-window recess beside the right-hand stack and a mantlepiece and cupboard from the early 20th century that incorporate pieces of 19th-century neo-Gothic carving.
