Description

Hill Green Cottage is a cottage dating to around the late 16th century. It is timber-framed, now rendered, with a thatched half-hipped roof. The cottage is one storey and has an attic. It originally comprised five bays, with an axial stack in the former smoke bay and a service wing to the left. Around the 18th century, the cottage was divided into two units, with stairs added to each end. The front features two boarded doors and two three-light casement windows with leaded lights. There are also two eyebrow dormers, each with three-light 18th-century casement windows with leaded lights.

The interior retains much of the original timber frame, displaying jowled posts and down braces. A chamfered spine beam features run-out stops at the high end. A later floor was inserted. There are two inglenook fireplaces, one with a trefoil-headed niche for salt. Gable-end first-floor casements are in their original openings, with mortices indicating the former presence of diamond mullions. The roof is a clasped purlin roof with curved wind-braces. Original partitions and plasterwork remain.
