Description

Edge View is a squatter's cottage dating from the 17th century, which was extended and partly rebuilt in the late 18th century with later additions and alterations. The structure is timber framed with red brick infill that has replaced the original wattle and daub. There is also an addition made of local gritstone rubble and a plain tile roof. The original single-cell plan was expanded in the late 18th century by adding a right-hand bay, and the front wall was rebuilt during this time.

The cottage is one storey high with a gable-lit attic. The timber framing is exposed on the left gable end and the back wall of the left-hand bay, featuring square panels with two panels from the cill to the wall-plate and five across, supported by short straight tension braces. Mid-19th century casements with segmental brick heads are positioned to the left and right of a 20th-century half-glazed door, which is sheltered by a contemporary gabled wooden porch. There is an internal red brick stack behind the ridge to the left and an external red brick stack to the right, with a 19th-century stone lean-to abutting.

Inside, the timber frame remains largely intact in the 17th-century part, including the present cross-wall with long straight tension braces. The left-hand ground-floor room features a chamfered spine beam with a broach stop, and there is another chamfered spine beam in the right-hand ground-floor room. An oak newel staircase leads to the back wall, and the single-purlin roof has a central truss (formerly the gable end) constructed with Queen struts.
