Description

Rose Cottage is a cottage dating from around 1700, with some alterations and extensions made in the mid- to late 19th century. It features a timber frame with painted brick nogging set on a high plinth of painted red sandstone and Alberbury breccia rubble, while the rear wall has been rebuilt in coursed red sandstone rubble. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building has an end lobby entry plan consisting of two framed bays and is one storey high with an attic.

On the left side, there is an integral stone and brick end stack, and a large central gabled dormer that displays an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts, along with a 19th-century two-light wooden casement window. The framing consists of square panels, with two extending from the sole-plate to the wall-plate. To the right, there is another 19th-century two-light wooden casement window, and to the left, a six-panelled door beneath a 19th-century gabled wooden porch. The right-hand gable end features an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts, while a lean-to wash house on the left has a corrugated iron roof, a lattice window, and a boarded door at the front. There is also a lean-to addition at the rear.

Inside, the roof includes single purlins and wind braces. The left-hand ground-floor room has plain joists and a chamfered beam with ogee stops, and there is another chamfered beam with ogee stops that divides the bays. A large open fireplace features a chamfered lintel with ogee stops, and there is a corner newel staircase. This cottage is a largely unaltered example of a late 17th-century or early 18th-century squatters' cottage.
