Description

Wattlesborough Hall is a farmhouse dating to shortly after 1711. It is constructed of roughly squared and coursed red and grey sandstone with red sandstone dressings; the left-hand gable end is rendered, and it has a graded slate roof. The building has a plinth, a moulded stone eaves cornice, and a parapeted gable end to the left with stone coping and moulded kneelers. There is an integral brick end stack to the left. The farmhouse is five bays wide, with C19 wooden cross-windows featuring triple-keyed lintels. A C20 glazed door is centrally placed, featuring a heavy rusticated surround and a five-keyed lintel. A right-hand ground-floor window is likely a former doorway, indicated by straight joints and brickwork below the cill. Three windows are present at the rear, with a raised central first-floor staircase window and a blocked stone cross-window off-centre to the right. A C20 brown brick one-storey addition extends from the rear.

Inside, there’s an 18th-century three-flight staircase with winders, rising to the attic, featuring a closed string, turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and a beaded square bottom newel post. The house was originally built adjoining the remains of Wattlesborough Castle, and both were occupied as a single dwelling until the late 19th century. An engraving of the farmhouse suggests the castle had a probably medieval wing on the site of the current 18th-century building, so it's probable that the farmhouse incorporates reused materials, and may even be a thorough remodelling.
