Description
Welsh Lodge is an entrance lodge dated 1832, likely designed by Thomas Jones from Chester. It is constructed from roughly squared and coursed Alberbury breccia rubble, featuring red sandstone ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof. The building has an irregular L-plan and is designed in the Tudor Gothic style, comprising a basement, one storey, and an attic. Notable architectural elements include a plinth, a moulded stone eaves cornice, and parapeted gables with chamfered coping, moulded kneelers, and obelisk finials at the feet and apexes. There are stacks in the valley and on the external gable end to the west, each topped with a dentil brick cornice and paired star-shaped brick shafts.
The south-east front, which serves as the entrance, features a one-light casement window to the left and a gabled porch to the right. The porch has one-light windows on the sides and a door with six raised and fielded panels topped by a chamfered Tudor arch. To the right of the porch is a one-storey wing with a three-light window on the front. The south-west front includes a gabled wing projecting to the right, which has a two-light attic casement and a ground-floor canted bay with a plain tiled roof. There is also a probable staircase tower set back in the angle to the left, featuring a date shield in the gable and a ground-floor one-light window, along with a wing to the left that has a ground-floor one-light window. The interior has not been inspected. This lodge serves as the south-west entrance to Loton Park, where Thomas Jones undertook work around 1830 and 1838.
