Description

Alberbury Castle is a castle dating from the early 13th century, likely built for Fulk Fitz Warin III. It features coursed Alberbury breccia with red sandstone dressings and signs of former limewashing. The remains include a very ruinous two-storey keep located to the south-west, which probably once had a first-floor hall, and an irregularly-shaped bailey to the north-east, enclosed by a wall approximately 175 metres long, 3 metres high, and 1 metre wide.

The keep has remnants of an internal first-floor cill string and both round- and pointed-arched openings. The walling shows battered lower stages and includes a diagonal buttress to the north-west, along with a section of chamfered plinth to the west. There is a 19th-century doorway leading to the churchyard at the north-east corner, featuring a pointed chamfered arch and a nail-studded boarded door with strap hinges. A pointed-arched doorway to the east has a boarded door and a round rear arch with rounded reveals, inscribed with "1646" on the tympanum. Another 19th-century doorway to the west has a moulded pointed arch and a boarded door.

Ralph the Fat is noted as the first recorded tenant of the Manor of Alberbury, likely succeeded by Fulk Fitz Warin I. The castle is part of a close group in the village center, alongside the church and adjoining garden walls to the south.
