Description
Red Abbey is a late 18th-century farmhouse constructed of red brick in a Flemish garden wall bond, with slate roofs. It is arranged in a T-plan, featuring a semi-circular stair tower to the rear of the building. The house has three storeys, with a dentil brick eaves cornice and integral brick end stacks.
The south-east front has two windows, with glazing bar sashes and segmental gauged brick heads. The second floor features a two-light wooden casement to the right and a late 19th-century cast iron two-light casement to the left, both with lattice lights. A central four-panelled door, with the top panels glazed, is topped by a moulded architrave and a flat hood supported on shaped brackets. A central, semi-circular stair tower is located at the rear and features a tall stair window. There are also single-storey lean-to service blocks flanking the stair tower.
Inside, an oak newel stair is present in the stair tower. The stair tower is considered an unusual feature for a house of this date.
