Description
Rowton Lodge is an entrance lodge, likely built between 1809 and 1812 by George Wyatt. It features coursed Alberbury breccia rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings and has a hipped thatched roof. The building is designed in an L-plan and showcases Tudor Gothic style, resembling a cottage orné. It is a single storey structure with an integral brick end stack on the right, which has a star-shaped shaft, and a brick stack on the rear wing with two star-shaped shafts.
On the right side, there is a canted bay with diamond leaded casements arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern, featuring Tudor-arched lights and chamfered reveals. To the left, a three-bay loggia or porch has chamfered Tudor arches, a diagonal buttress with a chamfered offset, and a one-bay return to the left. Within the loggia, there is a one-light casement and a boarded door in the return to the right. The left-hand return front includes a two-light casement, while the right-hand return front has one-, two-, and three-light casements. The rear wing has been extended twice, as indicated by straight joints. The interior has not been inspected. Rowton Lodge serves as the south-eastern entrance lodge to Rowton Castle.
