Description

Lane End is a disused squatter's cottage, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with some minor later alterations. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill set on a high painted brick plinth that extends to the left gable end, topped by a graded slate roof. The cottage has a one-room plan, with rectangular panels at the front that include a long straight tension brace and light horizontal members, while the rear has two square panels. The right gable end displays projecting single-purlin ends and thin raking struts connecting the tie beam to the principal rafters. There is a segmental-headed boarded door on the right and a segmental-headed 19th-century casement window on the left, with another 19th-century casement directly below the eaves in the center. An integral end stack is located on the left side. Attached to the right gable end is a light timber-framed lean-to with a plank door at the front, likely built at the same time as the cottage. The interior could not be inspected during the resurvey in October 1986, but it was noted to contain a fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel and a 19th-century cast-iron cooking range, along with a straight-flight staircase at the back. This building is included as a complete and unaltered example of a squatter's cottage.
