Description

Oak Cottage is a late 17th-century farmhouse, now a house, with later additions and alterations. The house is timber framed with painted brick infill, with sandstone blocks to the left gable end, which features coped verges. It has a graded slate roof. The original house appears to have been of two framed bays, with a 19th-century former cowhouse attached to the right, which was originally longer. A lower red brick outbuilding from the late 19th or early 20th century is attached to the left. The timber framing consists of square and rectangular panels, two and three from sill to wall-plate on the main house, with red brick to the cowhouse. The right gable end of the house is visible within the cowhouse and displays square panels and a collar and tie beam truss with V-struts from the collar. A 19th-century casement window is located immediately to the left of the boarded front door, which is sheltered by a bracketed gabled hood in the centre of the left gable. Directly above the door is a gabled eaves dormer with a 19th-century casement window and slate-hung sides. A boarded door is located to the right of the front door, alongside a 19th-century casement window. The cowhouse has a boarded door to the left and a 19th-century metal window to the right. An integral brown brick end stack is present to the left, with the top rebuilt in 20th-century red brick, and a red brick stack is located at the bottom of the roof slope to the right. The interior was not accessible during a resurvey in October 1986, but is likely to be of interest.
