Description

Kynaston Farmhouse, now a house, dates to 1798, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick on a chamfered sandstone plinth, with a slate roof and external end stacks. The building has an L-shaped layout, with a lower range extending to the rear on the left side. It’s three storeys high, featuring a toothed eaves cornice and a three-bay facade where the central bay is slightly projected and topped with a pediment. The windows are glazing bar sashes, each with projecting keystones and painted stone wedge lintels. The central entrance has a plain pilastered doorcase with a bracketed open pediment, a flush six-panel door, panelled reveals, and a semi-circular fanlight. A datestone reading “T/WS/ 1798” is located at the top of the right stack.

Inside, a dog-leg staircase in the central hall rises to the second floor, featuring a ramped wreathed handrail and stick balusters on a carved open string. The front ground-floor rooms have plain spine beams and joists, while the first-floor rooms have moulded plaster cornices. Panelled doors are found throughout the house and there is a cellar to the right.
