Description
Grove Farmhouse is a late 16th-century farmhouse that has undergone significant rebuilding in the early 18th century and enlargement in the early 19th and early 20th centuries. The original structure is timber framed with some wattle and daub and brick infill, with sections rebuilt in red brick. The roofs are slate covered. The timber framing features small square panels, from the sole plate to the wall plate, with short straight angle braces. One framed bay appears to be a fragment of a larger house, with later additions to the northwest, northeast, and southeast. The farmhouse has two storeys, with a brick end stack on the right-hand side. A small first-floor wooden casement is visible on the front. An early 20th-century addition is attached to the front at a right angle, with a brick end stack and a lean-to porch in the angle to the right. A half-glazed door is located in the angle to the left. The left-hand gable end was rebuilt in the 18th century, featuring a plat band, while the gable on the right-hand side displays an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and V-struts. An early 19th-century addition is attached to the right, featuring a ground-floor glazing bar sash window, a first-floor three-light casement, and a brick end stack. A lean-to is located at the rear, with a three-light casement and a boarded door. The central ground-floor room has a deep-chamfered cross-beamed ceiling with some chamfered joists. The framing of the rear wall is visible within the lean-to. The interior of the first-floor rooms and roof were not inspected. Despite later additions, the farmhouse retains a largely complete timber frame and demonstrates group value.
