Description
The Nesscliffe War Memorial is a structure honoring those who died in both world wars and local servicemen who served in the First World War. Unveiled in 1920, it is made of red sandstone and Yorkstone. The memorial has a square plan and is elevated on a bank to the east of the roadside, accessed by a flight of steps.
The cross, crafted from sandstone, features raised edges and a circular design behind the cross head, resembling a Celtic cross. Its shaft is tapered, and there are circular bosses at the center of the cross and on each of the four arms. The square base connects to a plinth that has squared rubble at the corners and ashlar panels of Yorkstone in the center of each side, which display inscriptions. The western face, facing the road, reads: ‘1914-18 / FOR FREEDOM AND RIGHT / (Names) / THEY GAVE ALL’. The northern face is inscribed with ‘THESE ALSO SERVED / (Names)’, while the eastern and southern faces also contain panels with names. Additionally, the western face has the inscription ‘1939-45’ along the bottom of the sandstone plinth, with three names listed below.
