Description
The Castlethorpe War Memorial is a 5-meter tall structure made of Portland stone, located in the former village Pound, east of the Grade I-listed Church of St Simon and St Jude. The memorial features a tall, tapering pylon raised on a two-stage base. The plain lower stage is topped with a capped plinth that has curved, fluted, and buttressed corner stones. The square-sectioned pylon rises from this plinth and includes inset panels on each face. The cap of the pylon has a simple cornice with dentils and is topped by a short obelisk. The front face of the obelisk is decorated with a laurel wreath carved in relief.
The front face of the pylon bears the inscription: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF OUR BRAVE FALLEN (9 NAMES) 1939 – 1945 (1 NAME)." The other three faces are labeled "ROLL OF HONOUR" and list the names of servicemen who returned after serving in the First World War. Additionally, the front face of the upper stage of the base is dedicated with the inscription: "ERECTED IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918."
