Description
The Rowlands Gill War Memorial is a tall granite structure located at the junction of Station Road and Smailes Lane. It is designed as a tapering pylon with a rectangular base, consisting of three sections that rest on a moulded foot. This foot is set upon a stone step, which is further elevated by a lower step made of rendered bricks. The memorial is raised on a hexagonal platform that can be accessed from the pavement by two steps. A low, staggered wall with a coping encloses the platform at the rear.
The upper part of the pylon features a wreath, carved in low relief and suspended from a ribbon. The central section displays the main dedicatory inscription, which reads: "ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF ROWLANDS GILL TO THE MEMORY OF THE FALLEN HEROES WHO PAID THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR AUG. 1914 NOV. 1918. (NAMES) 'MAY THEIR DEEDS BE HELD IN REVERENCE.' (NAMES)."
Below this, a rectangular bronze plaque is affixed to the section underneath, which states: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945. (NAMES)." A small shield is also carved in low relief beneath the plaque.
It is noted that the benches within the war memorial enclosure are not considered to have special architectural or historic interest.
