Description
The stables located to the south-east of Gibside were built in 1746 by Daniel Garrett for George Bowes. Constructed from sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, the stables feature a square plan ground courtyard and are designed in the Palladian style. The building has two stages and nine windows. The central section, which is pedimented, includes a double door flanked by round-arched niches with impost bands, and three windows with architraves above. Each side has a bay that is slightly set back, containing a niche in a lugged architrave beneath a bracketed cornice, with a window in an architrave above. The five bays have a high coped parapet, while the two bays set back on either side have raised surrounds for the door and windows. All windows feature glazing bars, and the roof is hipped.
