Description
Old Hollinside is a fortified manor house that possibly dates back to the 13th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, with a coursed squared sandstone lower section and larger quoins in the lower parts. The building has a hall plan, featuring a small chamber at the south-west, and larger chambers at the south-east and north-east flanking the entrance. It shows evidence of two storeys and has three bays.
The east elevation features a flat lintel with alternate block jambs leading to an empty entrance beneath the lintel, alongside a rectangular window at the first floor, which is recessed behind a tall two-centred arch under a turret. There is a passage behind the entrance that may have contained a stair. To the right of the south-east chamber, there is a small rectangular window. The south elevation displays two windows at ground level and one to the right, all with chamfered stone lintels and sills, featuring irregular jambs. A two-light, two-centred-arched window on the first floor to the west has plate tracery with a vesica between the light heads. The north elevation includes a small rectangular window at ground level and a larger rectangular window at the first floor, with a stone drain to the right.
Inside, the interior shows corbels in the south wall above window level, and the north-east chamber has a barrel vault running north-south. At the time of the survey, the building was empty and roofless.
