Description
The sundial, piers, and wall located to the west of the chapel in the Gibside Estate date from the late 18th century to early 19th century. The sundial is made of sandstone and bronze, featuring a cyma moulded plinth supporting a baluster that is decorated with garlands and acanthus leaves. A moulded stone slab holds a circular bronze dial engraved with the words "OMNIS SPRITUS LAUDET DOMINUM." The enclosure around the sundial is formed by a dwarf ashlar wall with low-sloping coping, flanked by two circular piers that have a cornice band and cyma coping. The original railings have been removed from this enclosure.
