Description
The Monument to British Liberty is a column located in the Gibside Estate, built between 1750 and 1757. Initially designed by Daniel Garrett until 1753, the project was completed by James Paine. The monument features a statue of British Liberty, created by Christopher Richardson, and was commissioned by George Bowes, a Member of Parliament and coal owner. Constructed from ashlar sandstone, the Tuscan column stands 140 feet high on a base, topped with a cornice that supports an overhanging plinth. The statue depicts Liberty holding a staff of Maintenance and a cap of Liberty in her right hand.
