Description
Leap Mill Farmhouse and aqueduct wall, with an attached pigsty/henhouse, is a Grade II* listed farmhouse and mill dating from the early 18th century, with a late 18th-century addition. The building is constructed from thinly-rendered sandstone rubble, featuring ashlar dressings and quoins, and has a Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys.
The structure consists of two parts: the south elevation includes a two-storey, two-bay right section that houses the main house and mill, and a one-storey, two-bay left addition situated on higher ground, which is continuous with the first floor of the right part. The first build has steps leading down to a near-central boarded door beneath a flat stone lintel. The fenestration is irregular, with varied window sizes, including a late 19th-century sash on the ground floor and a 16-pane sash above to the left. There is a small 4-pane light above the door and a wide 2-pane light to the right on the first floor, all with flat stone lintels. The roof features 20th-century skylights and three ridge chimneys. The right return has small square lights for the mill and a pit for the overshot mill wheel.
The attached pigsty/henhouse is set back to the right over the mill race and includes rear walled enclosures and a single hen-hole. The second build on the left has steps leading up to a boarded door and a 16-pane sash window on the left, both with flat stone lintels.
Inside, there is a stop-chamfered stone surround to the internal door leading to the mill, which is now enclosed in a rear extension. The mill retains complete machinery, including upper wheels made of wood and lower wheels of cast iron with wooden cogs, as well as two sets of millstones. A stone wall, approximately 80 cm wide, breaks forward on the right and extends the length of the garden; this wall formerly supported the aqueduct for the mill.
